Sofia Vusir Jansson
"When paper flowers did not yet exist in Sweden, Sofia began creating them – laying the foundation for what has now grown into an entire movement."
Background
Sofia Vusir Jansson is an artist, photographer, and author who for over a decade has shaped and developed paper flowers into an artistic field of its own. She is the pioneer whose work has inspired an entire generation of creators.
With a background as a photographer and scenographer, Sofia has for many years created visual worlds for both cultural and commercial contexts. She ran the influential blog Mokkasin and worked for several years as in-house photographer and scenographer for the international brand Numero 74, where her visual compositions and imagery defined the brand’s aesthetic.
As an artistic director, she has also led design projects in public spaces – from restaurants to cultural centers – to installations in museum settings, always with the same high artistic quality, precision, and imagination.
"A treasure chest on a much higher level than most in its genre."
Books & International Publishing
As an author, Sofia has published three acclaimed books: Hidden Places (2019), Hidden Winter (2022), and Pappersblommor (Natur & Kultur, 2024).
Hidden Places was translated into German (Magische Kindheit, 2020) and Norwegian (Barns verden, 2021).
Hidden Winter was published in Danish (Vinterpynt, 2023) and German (Nordische Bastel-Fantasien, 2023).
Hidden Winter was created in close dialogue with the Nordic Museum, where Sofia – as one of only two photographers in the world – was granted exclusive access to the museum’s attics and hidden environments. The book draws on materials, history, and craft from the museum’s collections.
Pappersblommor, photographed by Linda Lomelino, was praised by BTJ with the highest rating, 5/5, and described as “a treasure chest on a much higher level than most in its genre.” The book has already been reprinted and sold to international publishers. In spring 2026, it will be launched globally under the title Paper Flower Magic in the USA, Canada, and internationally – the first time a Swedish artist in this field reaches such a release.
"She is not only a creator but also an artistic leader who has built and led craft teams for projects without precedent in Sweden."
Collaborations & Exhibitions
Her work has been featured in Vogue Scandinavia, Faire Magazine, Hemslöjd, and on the international platform The House That Lars Built. This places her in an international context of contemporary artists and creators. She has created installations for the Lillehammer Art Museum/Maihaugen, exhibited at Sven-Harrys Art Museum and Skansen, and held a solo exhibition at Fredriksdal.
For Svenskt Tenn, Sofia has over several years designed entire collections of paper flowers: Vinterljus, Vintervindla, Easter collections with two different flower forms, the 2024 Anemone, and a complete wreath in the same series. She has also designed patterns for Svenskt Tenn’s glass Easter eggs.
All flowers and patterns have been created by Sofia from scratch, representing an entirely new design language for paper flowers and their extension into decorative objects – a language later imitated by others. In her work, exclusive materials such as brass and pearls have been integrated into the designs, with stamens, stems, and details of her own making. These projects, often large-scale and led by Sofia’s artistic direction of craft teams, have placed the paper flower in a new, more advanced and artistic context.
"What makes Sofia’s workshops unique is the combination of artistic excellence, innovation, and meticulous presentation. She creates experiences like no one else, which both cultural institutions and companies return to."
"Sofia offers more than a course. It is a masterclass with the original – at the highest artistic level. At the same time, her teaching experience ensures that anyone can participate and succeed, regardless of prior knowledge."
Workshops & Masterclasses
As a workshop leader, Sofia has created her own form of masterclass – a format that has since inspired many of those who today lead workshops themselves. Her workshops are characterized by the highest artistic quality, meticulous presentation, and an inclusive atmosphere where deep craft knowledge meets generosity. What makes Sofia’s workshops special is the combination of advanced flowers and accessible pedagogy. She has spent many years developing methods that make even complex forms possible for everyone. Step by step, she guides participants through the process so they can succeed – even if they have never held crepe paper before.
She has taught thousands of participants at museums, art galleries, companies, and in her own studio. In spring 2025, Sofia filled the Nordic Museum with her entirely new workshop Floratorium – a technique she herself developed that redefined how paper flowers can be created. Over 80 participants experienced an innovation in the craft. She is now taking this technique further into more advanced work in autumn 2025. At the Carl Larsson house, together with Pernilla Wåhlin Norén, she has led unique workshops in the artist’s own studio. She is also commissioned for exclusive brand events.
Podcast: Kvinnor och Rum
Beyond the practical making, Sofia is also a cultural voice. Together with Pernilla Wåhlin Norén, she hosts the podcast Kvinnor och Rum (“Women and Rooms”) – a conversation about culture, creativity, and women’s place in space and history. The podcast reflects the same combination of knowledge and cultural grounding that permeates her artistic work.
